Step-By-Step Instructions To Replace The Platen Roller On The Zebra ZT111
To replace the platen roller on the Zebra ZT111 printer, follow these troubleshooting and reset steps:
What you’ll need & safety prep
- Power off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove any media (labels) and ribbon installed.
- Work in a clean area (dust/adhesive build-up can cause print issues).
- Make sure you have the correct replacement platen roller/kit for ZT111. Documentation notes part numbers for similar models (ZT111, ZT211, ZT231) so check yours.
- Take anti-static precautions (the printhead is sensitive) as indicated in Zebra’s manual.
Step-by-step replacement
These steps are derived from the service manual and maintenance guides for Zebra printers including the ZT111.
- Open the printer cover
- Open the media cover and any dispenser door if present.
- Ensure the ribbon and labels are removed (so nothing obstructs the platen roller).
- Release the platen roller bearings/latches
- Locate the two bearing latch tabs (one on each side of the platen roller). For many Zebra models you pull these tabs towards the front of the printer and then rotate them upward to release the roller.
- On the ZT111 specifically the service guide talks about loosening screws on a bracket for the platen roller housing if print is uneven.
- Remove the old platen roller
- With the latches released, lift the platen roller out of its housing.
- Slide off any gears and bearings from the shaft of the roller (so these will move to the new roller). For example: “Slide the gear and the two bearings off the shaft of the platen roller.”
- Take note of the orientation of these components—they must go back exactly the same way on the new roller.
- Install the new platen roller
- Place the bearings and drive gear onto the new roller shaft in the same order/position as the old.
- Lower the roller into the printer frame/housing aligning the gear on the left side (as most documentation shows) and ensure proper alignment.
- Move the bearing latch tabs back into the locked position (rotate them down/towards the rear) and ensure they snap securely.
- Final check and restore operation
- Close the media cover and any dispenser door.
- Reinstall media and ribbon.
- Plug in and power on the printer.
- Perform a test print or calibration to verify smooth feeding and even print quality.
