How To Stop SATO Printers From Skipping Labels
Why is my SATO printer skipping labels?
The cause of a SATO printer skipping labels is usually due to the printer not being fully calibrated or that your driver settings are not set properly for the label size that you are using. Calibrating ensures the correct and consistent positioning of the label in the printer, and the print on the label.
To fix your SATO printer from skipping labels, follow these 5 quick steps:
1. Re-calibrate the label sensor (most common fix)
SATO printers detect the gap or black mark between labels. If calibration is off, it will skip labels.
Basic calibration steps (general method):
- Turn the printer OFF.
- Hold the FEED button.
- Turn the printer ON while still holding FEED.
- Release the button when the printer starts feeding labels.
- The printer will feed several labels and auto-calibrate.
After calibration, print a test label.
(Exact steps can vary slightly by model like SATO CL4NX, SATO WS4, or SATO CG2.)
2. Check the sensor position
Inside the printer there is a movable media sensor.
Make sure:
- The sensor is aligned with the label gap or black mark.
- It is not positioned over the label itself.
Misalignment will cause skipped labels.
3. Clean the media sensor
Dust or adhesive buildup can confuse the sensor.
How to clean:
- Turn printer off.
- Open the print head.
- Use isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab.
- Gently clean:
- Media sensor
- Print head
- Platen roller
Let dry before closing.
4. Verify label settings in software
If the label height setting is wrong, the printer will skip labels.
Check in the driver/software:
- Label height
- Gap size
- Media type (Gap / Black mark / Continuous)
5. Check label stock
Problems can occur if:
- Labels have very small gaps
- Labels are transparent
- Labels are inconsistent sizes
Quick test:
Load labels → press FEED once.
- Your SATO printer model
- Whether it skips before printing or after printing
- What size labels you’re using
Once complete, then you check the Media settings. Confirm that the Media Loading is set so that the media is aligned correctly, and that the printer is set to the correct Media Type.
Following these easy steps will help to ensure that your labels and your SATO printers are working as a team in tandem printing on each and every label, every time.
