Step-By-Step Instructions To Install The Cutter On The Zebra ZT231
Here’s how to install and set up the cutter module for your Zebra ZT231:
Mechanical Installation (field upgrade)
You’ll need the Zebra ZT Series Cutter Upgrade Kit (P1123335‑041), typically installed by an authorized technician—though it can be a field upgrade.
Basic steps (modelled on comparable Zebra cutters):
- Remove the front bezel or shield top of the printer.
- Align and insert the cutter module into the front slot.
- Secure it with screws from underneath, ensuring it’s flush and tight.
- Replace the bezel/shield.
Note: Exact screw positions may vary; follow the upgrade kit’s included instructions.
Routing Media Through the Cutter
- Open the printhead lever and slide out the outer media guide.
- Feed media through the transmissive sensor slot and through the cutter slot.
- Position the media guides snugly against both sides.
- Close the printhead lever.
- (Optional) Attach the cutter catch tray to the front.
Software & Configuration
On the printer LCD:
- Go to Menu → Print → Label Position → Collection Method
- Choose Cutter (or Delayed Cut, if you plan to trigger cuts via ZPL commands)
- Save your changes and exit.
- Press PAUSE to resume operations. The printer may auto-calibrate or feed labels.
Via ZPL (if you don’t use the display):
^XA
^MMC ; set Cutter mode
^JUS ; save settings to memory
^XZ
- Cuts will occur after each label. You can fine-tune cut timing using ^PQ and suppress cuts using ^XB, plus adjust tear-off position.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Lubrication: Periodically clean and lightly lubricate the V‑blade inside the cutter. Use 90% IPA to clean, then apply silicone/PTFE oil per manual, wipe off excess, and reattach the shield.
- Troubleshooting:
- Ensure the cutter shield is properly secured.
- Confirm you’ve set the correct mode through the display or via ZPL.
- Run a configuration test (hold FEED + CANCEL for 2 sec) to check cutter function
- If persistent issues occur, have a Zebra-authorized technician inspect the installation.
