Zebra ZT231 How To Load Media With The Peel Option

To load media with the peel option on the Zebra ZT231 thermal label printer is fairly easy and can be done within minutes.

Watch the video below.

Step-By-Step Instructions To Load Media With The Peel Option On The Zebra ZT231

Here’s how to load media with the Peel-Off option on the Zebra ZT231:

Step-by-Step: Loading Media in Peel-Off Mode

  1. Insert the roll or fanfold media as usual under the dancer assembly and through the transmissive sensor—ensuring it just touches the sensor slot
  2. Open the printhead assembly by lifting the printhead-open lever and let it fully pivot upward
  3. Slide out the outer media guide completely.
  4. Press down the peel-off mechanism release lever to open the peel assembly
  5. Extend ~500 mm (18″) of media out the front.
    • Peel off and discard labels from this strip, leaving only the liner
  6. Feed the liner (label backing) behind the peel assembly so its end exits the front of the printer
  7. (Optional) If you have the Liner Take-Up option installed:
    • Slide and align the liner into the take-up spindle, wrap it, and tighten by turning counterclockwise
  8. Close the peel assembly using the release lever—use your right hand only to avoid risk of finger pinch
  9. Slide the outer media guide back until it lightly contacts the media.
  10. Close the printhead assembly to secure it.
  11. Lower the media cover.
  12. On the printer menu:
    • Go to Print → Label Position → Collection Method, and select Peel Off
  13. Press PAUSE to resume printing (printer may auto-calibrate or feed).
  14. Calibrate sensors for best results: Menu → Calibrate Ribbon and Media Sensors
  15. Print a configuration label (press FEED + CANCEL for 2 seconds) to verify everything is working

Quick Tips

  • If using only the Peel option (no take-up), skip step 7.
  • Always clean the peel rollers regularly—adhesive buildup can impair performance
  • Keep the outer media guide snug to prevent the liner from slipping.
  • Use quality labels; poor media can cause peeling issues
