Zebra ZT231 How To Replace The Printhead

To replace the printhead on the Zebra ZT231 thermal label printer is fairly easy and can be done within minutes.

Watch the video below.

Step-By-Step Instructions To Replace The Printhead On The Zebra ZT231

Here’s how to replace the printhead on your Zebra ZT231 printer:

Step-by-Step Replacement Guide

  1. Power Down & Prepare
    • Turn the printer OFF, unplug the power and disconnect data cables.
    • Open the media cover and remove any media and ribbon. Allow the printhead to cool to avoid burns.
  2. Ground Yourself
    • Attach an antistatic wrist strap or regularly touch the metal frame to prevent electrostatic discharge.
  3. Release the Printhead
    • Slide the printhead latch forward/unlock position.
    • Tilt the printhead assembly upward—this pivots it free from the mechanism.
  4. Remove the Old Printhead
    • Carefully pull the printhead straight out of its clamp.
    • Disconnect the ribbon cable connectors (the ZT231 typically has two).
  5. Install the New Printhead
    • Connect the cable connectors firmly to the new printhead (noting their keyed orientation).
    • Slide the new printhead into the mechanism, aligning the locking posts with the latch holes.
    • Return the latch to the locked position to secure it.
  6. Clean the Printhead
    • Clean the heating element strip using an alcohol swab from a Zebra Preventive Maintenance Kit or lint-free cloth with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol. Wipe end-to-end. Let it dry.
  7. Reassemble & Test
    • Reload ribbon and media.
    • Close the printhead assembly and media cover.
    • Reconnect power and cables, then power ON.
    • Run a configuration/status report to verify the setup and functionality.
