Zebra ZT420 How Do Auto Calibration
To do auto calibration on the Zebra ZT420 thermal label printer is fairly easy and can be done within minutes.
Watch the video below.
Step-By-Step Instructions To Do Auto Calibration On The Zebra ZT420
Method 1: Auto Calibration from the Printer Menu (Recommended)
- Power on the printer.
- Press the MENU button.
- Use the arrows to go to Settings → press OK.
- Scroll to Printhead/Media (or Media Settings depending on firmware) → press OK.
- Find Calibrate Media or Media Calibration.
- Press OK to start calibration.
The printer will feed several labels as it automatically:
- Detects label length
- Detects gaps/notches/black marks
- Sets top-of-form calibration
Method 2: Quick Calibration (Fastest)
- Load labels and close the printhead.
- Hold FEED for 2–3 seconds, then release when the status indicator flashes once.
- The printer feeds a few labels and calibrates.
This is “Quick Calibration” — useful when switching label types but not when switching between gap/notch/black-mark media.
Method 3: Full Manual Calibration (Factory Method)
- Turn the printer OFF.
- Hold PAUSE + FEED while powering ON.
- Release buttons when the indicator lights flash.
- The printer enters Manual Calibration Mode and feeds labels more extensively.
Use this if:
- Labels are skipping
- The printer fails to detect gaps
- After switching between gap and mark media
Tips for Best Results
- Make sure labels are loaded properly and the media sensor is positioned over the gap/mark.
- Clean the sensors if calibration keeps failing.
- If using black mark media, ensure the sensor is aligned to the black stripe.
