Step-By-Step Instructions On How To Adjust The Printhead Pressure On The Zebra ZT420
Where to adjust
Open the printer and look at the printhead assembly—you’ll see two pressure dials:
- Inside dial (left side)
- Outside dial (right side)
Basic adjustment steps
- Open the printhead.
- Locate the two pressure dials.
- Turn:
- Counterclockwise → increases pressure
- Clockwise → decreases pressure
- Close the printhead and print a test label.
- Adjust gradually—one step at a time.
Recommended starting points (ZT410)
Use this as a baseline, then fine-tune:
- 1″ media → Inside: 4 | Outside: 1
- 2″ media → Inside: 3 | Outside: 1
- 3″ media → Inside: ~2.5 | Outside: ~1.5
- ≥3.5″ media → Inside: 2 | Outside: 2
How to fine-tune (most important part)
Adjust based on what you see on the label:
- Print too light overall
→ Increase both dials - Left side printing light
→ Increase inside dial - Right side printing light
→ Increase outside dial - Labels drifting left
→ Increase outside OR decrease inside - Labels drifting right
→ Increase inside OR decrease outside
Best practices (important)
- Use the lowest pressure needed for good print quality
- Too much pressure can cause:
- Ribbon wrinkles
- Uneven wear on the printhead
- Poor barcode quality
- Always adjust pressure after:
- Changing label width
- Switching media type
- Replacing printhead
Quick rule of thumb
- Start balanced → adjust only the side that looks bad
- Keep both dials as low and even as possible
